Slowly but surely, they are announcing the rest of the tour.
Skanking Radio on KBeach.org for all you in need of some afternoon ska!
Okay Harry Potter.
I like how I have seen this picture with at least 4 different watermarks/websites on it.
- Obviously can’t be a fan myself.
- Obviously don’t know anything about the music.
- “Making” things about race.
- “Perverting” ska music.
Where is Myles? He’s a more knowledgeable ska fan and good at pointing out the ridiculousness of whiteness. I need my boy on the case.
See, you are generalizing again.
Not all white ska fans do this.
No one said you were not a fan, you just are not the only fan.
Speaking for myself, I only established that I too, was aware of the heritage of ska, not that you did not.
The last two, i don’t even …
You know that island in the Caribbean. Where other islands like Barbados is located. So the term rude boy is related to ska and Caribbean culture. It does not belong to you ignorant White punk rockers who think you know everything about everything. Rihanna didn’t steal shit from ska punk. She used a word from island culture. Good lawd.
White Folk reporting in,
Just wanted to say that is a rash generalization. And in fact I wrote a research paper this semester on the influences of early Jamaican ska. I understand that the economic inequality that Kingston faced in the post colonial period contributed to a culture of crime in Kingston where upper class mocking Jamaican youths who found themselves in trouble with the law were titled Rude Boys.
Now can you pull out the deed on ska music? Because I will happily argue it does not belong to you either. In fact, the whole idea of someone owning a genre of music is silly, let’s move on. Rihanna is a pretty voice (that still gets autotuned?) and has a whole team of producers backing her up. And her song “Rude Boy” is more easily compared to the men’s anal toy I found searching the word “Rude Boy” (I was looking for a cheaper copy of Neville Staple’s book) than with anything ska related.
So yeah…
But the amount of silly people who don’t acknowledge how much it’s been whitewashed (if that’s the correct term) and white fans who think calling themselves rude boys is not at least a teensy bit problematic make my brain go *ouch*.
No but really… middle class white kids calling themselves rude boys and girls need to know where the term came from, not just in a geographical sense but where it’s meaning lies in terms of race and class.
While I agree that people should learn the roots of ska, it is simply a byproduct of 3rd wave. The 90s gave ska a larger audience than ever before, and while yes, middle class white kids have/had no idea what working class life is like. Most of America does not know that, because by the 1950s, the working class had all but disappeared from the US.
So with ska being exposed to the US, historically, a migrating cultural phenomenon has a fair chance to be misconstrued and then wrongly assimilated into the new society. This is not limited to the rude boy, or punks, but also political ideologies and religions.
I ask you to be gentle with these people, because when you sound condescending, that will completely turn them off from listening to you.
TL;DR Shit happens throughout history, we just have to deal with it to the best of our abilities.
Hey grayface,
I am doing fine! Just finished school (which finally allows time on tumblr). AND I am moving out of my current hell hole of a living situation at the end of the month! Lots to be excited for. :)
How about yourself gray dude/dudette?
Monday 1-3pm pacific is the current time for skanking radio (although that may change soon)
So if you want any song in particular just holler.
Apparently this is being mastered as we speak… a CD mash up between Big D and Moe Pope!
Not gonna lie, I am not a fan of DJ BC’s Big D mash ups.
